Rule of Thumb Engineering

How to prevent static charge in metal ducts transporting dry solid particles and/or
flammable VOC laden air streams:

The velocity at which the air stream containing solid particles or flammable VOC gases
will create a static charge if the metal ducts through which the air stream flows are not
grounded.

Connections between ducts and duct tees, elbows, reducers, etc. are many times isolated
from each other by sealants, gaskets between flanges, etc.

A grounding strap across each joint will ensure that the entire duct system is grounded
to one another and to the final grounding point of the duct system, which could be a
water pipe or a grounding rod driven into the ground.
